Currently, there is no consensus as to which women need to have surgery following a diagnosis of one of the main “high risk” lesions on breast core biopsy. Treatment standards vary significantly across the country and there is no standardization. Thus, some women may be under-treated resulting in a “missed” cancer while others may be over-treated with unnecessary surgery. Prospective trials are needed to standardized the treatment of women following a core biopsy with a pathologic diagnosis of a “high risk” lesion.
